The City of Penticton's Utilities Division is in search of a highly skilled and energetic individual for the full-time permanent position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II.

The City of Penticton Utilities Division keeps our community safe by providing clean, safe, drinking water, a reliable sanitary sewer system and storm water drainage to help prevent flooding.

The Division consists of the Water Treatment Plant, Utilities Distribution & Collections Department and Advanced Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWWTP) is an industry leading facility that protects public health and the environment by treating wastewater from residences, schools, hospitals, businesses, and industries.

The Plant also accepts wastewater from private septic systems via truck.

Under the general direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II is responsible and accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the City's wastewater treatment, liftstations, and reclaimed water systems.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant , liftstations, and reclaimed water systems .
  • Monitors systems using SCADA, observation of gauges, meters, and control panels and makes adjustments to the plant accordingly.
  • Visually inspects plant and all equipment daily to ensure proper functioning, trouble shoots control systems, and takes corrective action when required.
  • Maintains and calibrates instruments and analyzers for measuring dissolved oxygen, chlorine, turbidity, pH, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, etc.
  • Compiles data, prepares electronic reports, and completes logs detailing plant operation, ensuring accurate completion of operational, maintenance, laboratory, and other records.
  • Conducts tours of the Wastewater Treatment Plant as required.
  • Operates equipment such as chemical feed systems, dissolved air floatation, centrifuges, etc. that require user input to run properly.
  • Performs sampling and laboratory tests and adjusts plant settings in response to test results.
  • Assists maintenance staff when required, performs repairs or preventative maintenance as assigned.
  • Ensures plant cleanliness.
  • Follows all safe-work and lockout procedures and policies.
  • Makes recommendations to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor and Foreman on technical matters to optimize treatment efficiency.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills :

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks, establishes priorities, and responds calmly and efficiently in emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory tests and analysis procedures for plant operations and optimization of plant performance.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations.
  • Skilled in the use of computers including SCADA, spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications.
  • Ability to, be on standby and work after hours / on weekends. Call-out response must be under 20min.

Education, Training & Experience :

  • Completion of Senior Secondary School or equivalent.
  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma in a Water Engineering Technology program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Completion of Level II EOCP Wastewater Treatment certificate.
  • Experience in a Level 4 BNR Wastewater plant is an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence Minimum Class 5.

Position type :

Full-time Permanent (40 hours per week)

Wage :

$34.02 - $37.70 per hour (Pay Grade 12, CUPE)

Premiums :

$0.35 per hour (Wastewater premium), $0 - $2.00 per hour (EOCP Premium based on certification level)
