Urban Planner

Reporting to the Partnership team, working closely with Associates / Senior Associates, the Planner will play a key role in assisting with moving project files, writing planning rationales and reports, preparing presentations, and providing coaching to junior staff.

The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and liaise directly with top developers and consultants, as one of Ontario’s top Planning & Design consulting firms.

The ideal candidate is : passionate about development planning, a self-starter, and most importantly, a team player.

Salary for the role is between $70,000 $95,000 based on level of industry experience and exposure, plus bonus, benefits, RRSP matching, and vacation.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assist with planning rationale reports, analytical reports and various development applications, plans and planning studies
  • Assist with the preparation of complex planning studies, development applications, OPA, rezoning, subdivisions, variance and consents
  • Prepare drafts and outlines and coordinate materials for evidence for LPAT / TLAB expert witness hearings
  • Provide advanced detailed technical information and recommendations through written reports, public responses, internal memos, studies and presentations on current planning issues and the implications on various aspects of land use and development
  • Collect and review research data and information on a variety of properties across the GTA and other municipalities and prepare memos and reports
  • Provide high quality service to clients in a timely and efficient manner
  • Assist with creation of proposals, participate in community consultations and carry out site visits
  • Assist in managing files and coordinating work between parties
  • Collaborate with internal leadership team as well as multiple external parties in order to address questions and concerns and solve problems
  • Over time, gain experience presenting to the public, Committees and Councils, clients and stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Ideally over 2 years of experience in urban planning (consulting, municipal or development)
  • Diploma or Degree in Urban Planning, or a related field
  • MCIP and / or RPP designation, or working towards designation
  • Membership of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) an asset
  • Understanding of the OLT process, provincial and municipal policy, and the planning act
  • Knowledge of the municipal planning framework, planning principles and techniques, amendments and plans, and the changing policy planning legislation in Ontario
  • Curious and independent thinker, demonstrates good judgement, strong problem solving, analytical and interpretation skills in regards to research, statistical data, and planning compliance
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, high level of accuracy, and attention to detail
  • Excels in a dynamic and fast paced environment and enjoy new challenges
  • Positive attitude, collaborative and enthusiastic individual
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal with a successful track record in working with staff at all levels
