P MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES :

As required / directed :

• Help load horses into & dispatch them from the starting gate at the post time of each race
• Assist in the placement & set-up of the starting gate for each race (can include but is not limited to : dismantling & reassembling sections of the track rail, testing the gate, adjusting numbers, raking the area)
• Other duties as assigned

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES :

• Minimum Grade 12 Education or equivalent
• Very good general horsemanship; significant experience working with & around horses in confined spaces
• Physical ability to perform duties to required level (including alertness, physical agility & the ability to effectively hold & maneuver unruly horses)
• Working knowledge of operations & regulations pertaining to thoroughbred horse racing an asset
• Ability to work in a team setting; good inter-personal skills
• Ability to take instruction and / or work effectively without direct supervision
• Ability to react quickly, under pressure and effectively
• Must successfully pass a criminal and credit record check by the Gaming and Policy Enforcement Branch (GPEB) - Racing
