Duties

What is your mandate as a farm worker? Provide a service to the various research teams by preparing, establishing, maintaining, and harvesting experimental plots in organic soil fields.

Farm workers have the following responsibilities :

  • Perform field and greenhouse activities (field / seedbed preparation, seeding, ploughing) for scientific purposes;
  • Participate in maintenance activities of experimental plots;
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment used in the field : tractors, sprayers, combine harvesters and other agricultural and landscaping equipment;
  • Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment used for field maintenance or greenhouse work : light and heavy trucks, tractors, combines, string trimmers, commercial mowers, snow removal equipment;
  • Cleaning and fitting out premises : workshops, pesticide or fertilizer mixing station, laboratories;

Maintain a detailed record of activities and inputs for equipment maintenance, including spraying activities.

Work environment

The Research and Development Centre of Québec (RDCQ) is part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s network of 20 research centres.

The RDCQ has cutting-edge expertise in agri-environment and forage plants. Our mission is divided into three areas :

  • Improved agricultural productivity and sustainability in cold and wet climates;
  • Improving environmental performance through field cropping systems that incorporate the use of perennial forage species;

Reducing environmental impacts to maintain and improve the health of Canada’s agro-ecosystem.

The RDCQ is made up of three workplaces :

Québec / Sainte-Foy : Main building with 66 offices; 34 laboratories et 3 greenhouses.

Saint-Augustin Agronomic Station : 42,8 ha of experimental plots; laboratoires et greenhouses.

Normandin Experimental Farm : 145 ha of cultivated land, including about 20 ha in experimental plots.

Intent of the process

The intention of the RDC of Québec is to create a pool of qualified candidates at the GL-MAN-05 level in order to plan recruitment for the upcoming summer season (will start May 15th, 2024) at the Normandin Experimental Farm.

A pool of qualified candidates will also be established for the St-Augustin farm for future needs. Successful candidates may also be considered for indeterminate positions at the Normandin farm as well as the St-Augustin farm if opportunities arise.

In the event that a public service employee is found to meet the essential qualifications in this process, that application may be considered for an acting appointment, deployment, assignment or secondment.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Ability and willingness to obtain a valid Class 3 driver's licence to drive truck, trailer or semi-trailer combinations.

Ability and willingness to obtain a pesticide application certificate.

Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoor, cold, heat, dust, noise, and farm manure).

Ability and willingness to tolerate the presence of irritants such as dust, pollen and spores. Known allergies should be controlled with personal protective equipment or medication so as not to interfere with the performance of the duties of the position.

Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.

Ability and willingness to perform activities that require physical exertion, such as medium to high difficulty manual work that involves bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 20 kg).
