We are currently hiring an Engineer-in-Training (Ground Control) to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world.

The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice.

The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America.

The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.

Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and stability of underground mining operations. Reporting to the Lead, Ground Control Engineering.

This position will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to implement effective ground control measures, monitor ground conditions, and contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of the mine site.

  • Assist in the design and implementation of ground support systems to ensure the stability of underground openings, including drifts, shafts, and stopes.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of ground conditions using appropriate instrumentation and techniques.
  • Analyze geological data and geotechnical reports to assess rock mass characteristics and potential hazards.
  • Collaborate with mining operations and engineering teams to develop ground control plans and provide technical support.
  • Monitor and analyze ground movement, rock stability, and seismic activity to identify potential risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Participate in risk assessments and incident investigations related to ground control issues.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements related to ground control.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

what should you bring to the role?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in underground mining or ground control is preferred.
  • Experience with evaporites / soft rock is a considerable advantage
  • 3-5 years mining engineering or mine supervisory experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to, and actively working towards obtaining Ontario Professional Engineer designation
  • Knowledge of geotechnical principles, rock mechanics, and ground control practices.
  • Familiarity with numerical modeling (i.e. FLAC) and geotechnical instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office programs.

what is the work schedule?

  • This is a Monday-Friday position, working 8 hours per day. Overtime may be required to effectively support the operation.
  • This position is expected to work underground.
