About Living Landscapes Design

Living Landscapes Design is a passionate ecological design company near Wakefield, Quebec, just 30 minutes north of Ottawa, Ontario.

We're creating a thriving 4-acre forest garden and regenerative homestead alongside a beautiful lake with swimming and canoeing opportunities.

Secondary Site : A Community Farm

In addition to our homestead, we're also involved in developing a vibrant 40-acre farm focused on forest gardens and no-till permaculture organic gardens.

This future community land trust property is on its way to becoming an intentional community with plans to raise livestock like goats in addition to the existing flock of chickens.

This property also has a beautiful lake for swimming on hot summer days.

The Internship

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in permaculture design and ecological land management through a work-trade internship program.

Regardless of your chosen location (availability will be confirmed upon inquiry), you'll gain valuable experience in a variety of tasks :

  • Learning : Learn or expand your knowledge of holistic ecological garden and farm design principles.
  • Implementation & Maintenance : Implement and maintain perennial and annual educational gardens featuring edible and medicinal plants.
  • Soil Building : Collaborate on building healthy soil in existing and new garden beds.
  • Garden Integration : Work alongside us to integrate gardens around established trees and shrubs.
  • Planting : Actively participate in planting trees, shrubs, herbs, and other beneficial plants.
  • Plant Propagation : Propagate and care for plants in our nursery, giving you access to a steady stream of plants for your own projects (details below).
  • Independence & Initiative : Be comfortable working independently with the ability to take initiative and seek guidance when needed.

We Offer :

  • Learning : Gain hands-on experience and learn directly from permaculture designer and teacher Trent Rhode (with 19 years of experience!) and others with years of gardening and natural building experience.
  • Accommodations : possibility of staying at our 4-acre homestead by the lake (room in house or cabin, or camping on connected crown land with your own tent and bedding).

You'll also have access to a canoe and other outdoor equipment for exploring the lake. Alternatively, you can stay the community farm property (bedroom, indoor kitchen and community building with dining room, instruments, community events, etc).

Availability varies, so please inquire about which location can accommodate you during your desired stay.

  • Food : You'll have access to a portion of our seasonal vegetable and some fruit harvests if available.
  • Plant Nursery Access : As a thank you for your contribution (minimum 4 weeks), you'll receive ongoing access to our plant nursery's surplus stock, including exciting options like walnut trees, aronia berries, fruit rootstock, hazelnuts, vegetables, and medicinal herbs.
