Job Description
The Communication Disorders Assistant implements Speech-Language treatment programs and documents patient progress in the Health Record as per established Hospital Guidelines and under the supervision of the Speech-Language Pathologist.
- Conducts individual and group therapy sessions under the direction of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
- Monitors and progresses patient’s therapy program as needed within the range directed by the SLP
- Constructs alternative and augmentative communication systems boards and instructs patient in their use
- Completes workload measurement and Minimum Data Set (MDS) reporting as per Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care guidelines and RHC policy
- Reviews the patient’s health record for appropriate information and maintains accurate documentation
- Performs care coordination in audiology regarding consults and / or referrals
- Performs routine maintenance on therapy materials and equipment
- Assists in planning and carrying out Hospital educational programs related to Speech-Language Pathology
- Prepares therapy material for both individual and group therapy sessions
Qualifications

- Graduate of a Communicative Disorders Assistant / Communication Health Assistant / Speech Language Pathology Assistant program from a recognized college required
- Membership in the Communicative Disorders Assistant Association of Canada (CDAAC) preferred
- Experience in a Rehabilitation / Complex Continuing Care Hospital and / or Acute Care Hospital preferred
- Demonstrated expertise with geriatric, neurological and MSK conditions
- Active involvement in own continuing education
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
- Excellent communication skills in both oral and written in English
- Effective verbal and written communication to successfully work with all levels of the organization
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Satisfactory employment and attendance record required

Additional Information
Hours : Monday - Sunday; various rotating hour shifts; 8 : 00-16 : 00 (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs)
