Morrison Hershfield's Calgary office is currently seeking an experienced Intermediate Building Science Consultant to complement our team of professionals.
Morrison Hershfield has been active in the field of building science since the 1970s, and is recognized as a leader in the industry across North America.
Morrison Hershfield's Building Specialty Services division has a staff complement of over 200 practitioners involved in various aspects related to building envelope and building science, energy and performance modeling including engineers, architects, EITs, and technologists, with a broad range of experience and capabilities.
Over the years, we have worked for owners, developers, design professionals, contractors and manufacturers in all aspects of Building Engineering including analysis, design, construction administration, assessment, rehabilitation, renewals and maintenance on a broad range of both new construction and existing buildings.
This position involves the application of knowledge and skills related to multiple service lines in the location of hire and across multiple offices.
Performs overall projects under the general supervision of more senior staff and / or Department leadership. Works independently to deliver successful project outcomes.
Accountable for initiating and completing work.
The role is that of an intermediate level Consultant who will be managing Building Envelope / Building Science related projects consistent with this subset of Engineering Consulting. Main tasks will be :
Responsibilities :
Accountable for the technical quality and accuracy of work performed
Works under supervision of senior staff to define standards and specifications
Performs all technical service delivery as a form of business development and technical development
Develops political skills and learns to influence clients to meet mutual goals
May be required to provide supporting leadership functions under the direction of the Team Lead or Department Manager
Mentors less experienced staff in technical, business development, client management, project management, and other function
Prepares complex service line plans, designs, calculations, analyses with established codes, standards, drawings, and other specifications
Reviews design details by analyzing for continuity and viability
Completes complex technical surveys and / or audits
Conducts complex site testing to include gathering and analyzing information
Uses initiative and judgment to interpret and analyze data to make recommendations on complex technical problem solutions, designing or modifying components, and determining the intent of a specification or instruction
Conducts complex field review of construction projects to assess general conformance with the Contract Documents and prepare site visit reports for senior review
Reviews contract drawings and specifications prepared by the project team
May represent MH technical know-how at external event / conference
Business Development / Project Delivery :
Performs project contract drawing reviews (drawings, specifications, shop drawings, material submittals, etc.)
Attends pre-construction meetings and document discussions
Performs periodic site visits and utilize a site visit reporting system to identify and update action items
Performs field testing to confirm building enclosure performance (water, air leakage, infrared testing, etc.)
Provides and reviews regular written technical reports, including forensic / investigative reporting, pre-design briefs, facilities assessment reporting (reserve fund studies, building condition assessments, etc.
and others reporting types
Performs business development activities to secure new projects via client liaison and proposal preparation, while sustaining profitability
Acts as proposal primary author and may be assigned secondary author role by Department Manager for specific basic service line proposals
May project manage moderately complex service line projects, including management of task delivery and project profitability, including monthly financial management
Responsible for meeting MHMS (internal quality management system) requirements on proposal preparation and project delivery
May manage low risk multi-discipline project teams
Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of projects
Works under the guidance of senior project manager, Team Lead, or Department Manager
Pursues changes in scope to expand MH presence on projects.
Controls scope of work to prevent scope-creep
Communicates with clients on project delivery issues
Works with assigned staff resources for efficient delivery of the project
Reviews reports prepared by more junior staff and interprets findings to give clear recommendations and direction to clients
Qualifications :
Civil or Mechanical Engineering Degree from an accredited university or College level diploma in an engineering program
Pursuing registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Licensee (P.L.Eng.) is a plus
Minimum 8 years of experience in building science / building envelope related design and construction consulting
Excellent attention to detail, specifically with accuracy in verbal and written portrayal of site observations, and reasoning / deduction
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment
Self-motivated and strong commitment to teamwork
Strong oral and written communication skills, including excellent written English language technical reporting
Familiarity with building science principles, particularly as they relate to a cold interior Alberta environment
Knowledge of Microsoft Office and similar applications
